Summer in the Shenandoah Valley means one thing for a lot of us: hitting the road. Whether you’re heading up Skyline Drive, cruising over to Virginia Beach, taking the kids to Massanutten, or making the long haul down I-81 to visit family, your vehicle needs to be ready for miles of driving in serious heat. Nothing ruins a vacation faster than an overheated engine on the side of the interstate or a flat tire on a back road where cell service is spotty.
At Route 11 Automotive Repair, we want your summer adventures to be about the scenery, not the shoulder of the highway. Here’s the pre-trip inspection we recommend every Valley driver tackle before summer travel season kicks into high gear.
Start With the Tires
Tires are the single most important safety component on your vehicle, and summer heat makes them work harder. Check tread depth with the penny test — if you can see all of Lincoln’s head, it’s time for new tires. Don’t forget to check the pressure when the tires are cold, including the spare. Underinflated tires generate heat and can blow out at highway speeds, especially when loaded down with luggage and passengers.
Test the Cooling System
Summer traffic on I-81 backed up near Staunton or Winchester puts tremendous stress on your cooling system. We recommend a pressure test, coolant level and condition check, and a close look at hoses and belts. Soft, cracked, or bulging hoses are ticking time bombs in July heat.
Check the AC Performance
If your air conditioning isn’t blowing ice-cold, get it serviced now. A long drive in 90-degree heat with weak AC is miserable — and in some cases, dangerous for kids, pets, and older passengers.
Inspect Brakes Thoroughly
Mountain driving in Virginia means long descents that demand a lot from your brakes. Worn pads, warped rotors, or low brake fluid can turn a scenic drive into a scary one. Have them inspected before you load up the car.
Battery and Charging System
Summer heat kills batteries even faster than winter cold. A quick load test tells us if your battery has the cranking power to get you through the trip.
Fluids, Filters, and Wipers
Top off engine oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and washer fluid. Replace cabin and engine air filters if they’re dirty, and swap out wiper blades — summer thunderstorms roll in fast around here.
Lights and Signals
Check every bulb, including brake lights and turn signals. A burned-out bulb can earn you a ticket in another state.
Stop by our Harrisonburg or New Market location and let us get you road-trip ready. Safe travels from the whole Route 11 Automotive team.
